How Helane Morrison helped the SEC in Enforcing the Law

Helane Morrison is an attorney who has been practicing for about three decades. She spent the better part of her profession serving the Securities and Exchange Commission and held various offices at the organization. Morrison graduated from the Northwestern University where she awarded a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She then got her Juris Doctor from the University of California. The attorney once worked for the California Law review as editor-in-chief. She got her membership to the State Bar of California in 1987. In 1996, she joined the SEC’s San Francisco District office and served its enforcement department. She was made the director of implementation activities, and her performance at the office was outstanding. Helane assisted the SEC to uncover and sue corrupt executives in corporations such as Hewlett-Packard, Google, NextCard, Inc., New York’s Republic Securities, and HBO.

Morrison was also appointed as the chief of the San Francisco District, and her tenure lasted up to 2007. Her role was to supervise all the activities that the SEC conducted in the North Western states, which include Oregon, Montana, Washington, Alaska, North California, and North Nevada. Her immediate boss was the head of the Pacific Regional Office, which is in Los Angeles. David Bayles was the chief of the San Francisco District before Helane took over the office. He retired from the SEC and joined the Morrison and Foster Law Company.

The attorney made significant accomplishments at the SEC, and they can be matched by very few women. Other women who have ever been appointed as district chiefs are Mary Keefe, Carmen Lawrence, and Valerie Capron. Morrison’s term as the head of the San Francisco District was successful. She assisted the organization to uncover several illegal undertakings in the corporate world and also informed the public about securities. Morrison acted as a representative of the commission in various instances such in business transactions, government organizations, finance groups, and legal matters.

Helane Morrison also practiced as in the private sector by working for the Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin. She was hired by the firm in 1986 and was named as a partner in 1991. Morrison served the law company until 1996 when she left for the SEC. Her responsibilities included representing clients who were facing securities-related lawsuits, in-house corporate investigations, and stockbrokers in arbitrations. She currently works for the Hall Capital Partners and is the head of its compliance department.
