Mike Heiligenstein: Guiding CTRMA Towards Creating Greater Mobility Solutions

Under the leadership of its executive director Mike Heiligenstein, Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) has made significant steps towards tackling the problems of traffic congestion. Traffic congestion has continued to afflict many cities across the globe. To ease traffic congestion in central Texan counties of Travis and Williamson, CTRMA has embarked on an ambitious plan to decongest the roads using some of the latest technologies to drive their multifaceted approach. The agency has expanded some of the lanes on the existing roads to increase their capacities while also introducing express ways to minimize traffic stoppages. Some of the express lanes, which have been added, have been turned into toll roads. To regulate traffic flow through these toll lanes, CTRMA changes variable rates that changes with demand.

CTRMA has also baked innovative technologies into their solutions with the adoption of some of the most innovative and revolutionary ideas to ease traffic congestion. The agency is planning to incorporate fiber lines into one of their road projects under constructions and turn it into a smart road capable of communicating with the vehicles. It has also collaborated with Metropia to develop the mobile application capable of informing road users, in real time, the situation on the roads and recommend alternative routes in case of traffic congestion. To further reduce traffic congestion, CTRMA encourages road users to carpool using the Carma app. The app allows users find fellow road users to carpool with. Other alternatives recommended by CTRMA include pedaling or walking to work and use of pedestrian and bike paths and bridges. It has also formed Highway Emergency Response Operator in collaboration with Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. The HERO program is committed towards helping out motorists during minor incidences with the view of resolving them before they lead to traffic nightmares on the highways.

Before being appointed as the executive director of CTRMA in 2003, Mike Heiligenstein had already developed a career as a specialist in infrastructural development.
